Ever-cheerful Thai people love a good party, and festivals bring out Thailand’s fantastic sights, sounds and colours in full force. If you’re travelling to Thailand in November, don’t miss Loy Krathong (the Festival of Lights).
Loy Krathong is one of the most charming and beautiful festivals in all of Asia. The event occurs annually on a full moon during the twelfth month of Thailand’s lunar calendar, nearly always in November.
The word ‘loy’ means to float, while ‘krathong’ refers to lotus-shaped vessels made of banana leaves. Each person places a krathong laden with flowers, candles and joss sticks into rivers and canals to show gratitude to water gods as well as to honour Lord Buddha. Thais likewise believe that by setting afloat a krathong, any misfortune of the previous year will be similarly released and no longer trouble them.
One of the best places in Pattaya to enjoy Loy Krathong festival is the activity area Pattaya Klang, along Pattaya Beach. Around sunset, you will see some amazing shows of art and cultural showcase representing the Thai culture, beautiful celebration, the launch of the krathong and some fireworks.
Some celebrations also take place in river canal. Many hotels celebrate Loy Krathong at the swimming pool area, and offer special dinning offer for this occasion.
